You may have heard that alcohol consumption has some substantial benefits to your body. Several studies show that it can lower your risk of cardiovascular diseases and decrease chances of developing dementia. Be that as it may, you still need to consider some factors before drinking alcohol.
1. Consult your Physician – Always. Ask questions to doctors or health physicians to determine your alcoholic consumption limits. Remember, it’s best to have a second opinion.
2. Monitor Blood Sugar – Alcohol impairs your liver’s ability to produce glucose, so be sure to test blood sugar before having an alcoholic beverage. When you drink alcohol, your liver has to work to remove it from your blood rather than regulating blood sugar. Thus, it is never advisable to drink alcohol when your blood glucose has been already low. Furthermore, never associate alcohol and exercise. Physical activity and alcohol will increase your chances of getting a low blood sugar.
3. Eat a Decent Meal – Never skip food from your regular meal. Food slows down the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream, hence; drinking on an empty stomach is a big no – no.
4. Be Prepared – Take good heed to this Boy Scout’s of America’s motto into your heart. As they say, prevention is better than cure. Always carry glucose tablets or another source of sugar.
5. Ask yourself “Am I free from other health problems that may worsen if I consume alcohol?” –
Take time to ask these questions as alcohol can worsen several health problems such as high blood pressure, liver problems, nerve damage, stroke, eye problems, chronic pancreatitis and more.
People assume that alcohol is off limits if you are diabetic. Alcohol consumption is fine, so long as it is consumed cautiously. The key here is moderation.
The bottom line is; practice self-control when it comes to drinking. Drink slowly and practice sipping instead of gulping enormous amounts of alcohol.
